Resources for Taxonomy Creation

The following is a summary of resources which are useful in the taxonomy development process.  (Note that these resources are under development.)

Reverse Engineer the CI Taxonomy
The "goal" of the taxonomy development process is everything which exists on the web page for Financial Reporting for Commercial and Industrial Companies, except for a different use.  "Reverse engineering" what is on that page for your specific use is encouraged.  Take a look at that page and all of its contents, this is what you are "shooting for".

Best Practices
As a result of creating the first taxonomy, a number of best practices were developed an summarized.  Click here for a listing of these best practices.  Note that these best practices are summarized in the Taxonomy Creation Training Class which is described below.

Steps in CI Taxonomy Development Process
The following is a summary of the steps used by the XBRL Domain Working Group to develop the CI Taxonomy.  Whereas these steps are not the ONLY way to develop a taxonomy and certainly would not work in all taxonomy development cases, they do provide clues as to how to approach developing a taxonomy.  Click here for a summary of these steps.  Note that these steps are contained in the Taxonomy Creation Training Class described below.

Taxonomy Development Tool
The XBRL Domain Working Group developed a Microsoft Access 2000 based taxonomy builder tool to develop the CI Taxonomy.  This tool could be useful if you want to develop a taxonomy.  Please contact Charles Hoffman if you want further information regarding this taxonomy development tool.  Click here to download this tool.

Taxonomy Creation Training Class
XBRL Solutions, Inc., a member of the XBRL Steering Committee, has created a training class for the development of XBRL Taxonomies.  Click hear for a copy of that training material for your personal use.

Management and Administration of Taxonomy Development
Resources will soon be provided to help you understand how to manage and administer a taxonomy development project.
