The FFIEC and US Banking Regulation

The introduction of XBRL for banking regulation in the United States has proved a major success. More than 8,000 banks have been filing quarterly Call Reports in XBRL since October 2005. Banking regulators on the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council say its XBRL system has provided major benefits in efficiency, data validation and speed. Tokyo Stock Exchange Case Study

Bank of Spain Case Study

Bank of Japan Case Study

Financial services companies in Japan have been reporting monthly data in XBRL to the Bank of Japan (BoJ) since February 2006.  The BOJ says the introduction of XBRL for monthly balance sheet information has led to a significant reduction in the burden of data validation and other gains in efficiency.  It plans to expand the scope of XBRL reporting and to develop new systems for storing and accessing its XBRL data. National Bank of Belgium Case Study

Filing of accounts by Belgian companies to the National Bank of Belgium, which is responsible for collecting financial statements from the nation's firms, will switch to XBRL from April 2007.  Some 295,000 commercial and industrial companies are due to start filing in XBRL from that date.  The Bank's project to introduce XBRL has finished its development phase, leaving only details and final testing to be completed before launch.
