Japan mandates digital sustainability reporting

Posted on July 27, 2026 by Editor

The Japanese Diet has passed into law, requirements for sustainability disclosures and assurance by Japanese public companies and public interest entities (PIEs), based on the standards of the Sustainability Standards Board of Japan (SSBJ).

Crucially, the mandate includes associated Inline XBRL obligations.

The requirements will apply first to Prime Market-listed companies with a market capitalisation of 3 trillion yen or more, for fiscal years beginning on or after 1 April 2027. Mandatory adoption across the wider Prime Market has long been anticipated. The SSBJ standards closely mirror the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) frameworks, IFRS S1 and S2, with some jurisdiction-specific alternatives.

When the SSBJ published its inaugural standards last year, we noted that what remained missing was a fixed implementation date and an associated digital mandate. Both have now arrived, alongside Japan’s Financial Services Agency ongoing work to embed the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Taxonomy into the EDINET filing system.

Japan is not simply adopting ISSB-aligned standards but building them into its existing digital reporting infrastructure from the outset, with assurance attached. Sustainability data that arrives structured, tagged and assured is data investors can actually use, and it puts Japanese issuers on a strong footing with their global peers. It is a template that we have every expectation that other jurisdictions will emulate.
