The International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) recently convened at its newly established office in Beijing, China. The week included a number of updates, culminating in the Beijing International Sustainability Conference on 17 November.

The Beijing hub serves as a strategic centre, propelling ISSB standards for global impact and fostering international data comparability. Discussions with key stakeholders focused on implementing ISSB standards in China, a crucial step in advancing towards a global baseline for sustainability reporting.

The ISSB emphasised the urgency of a shared language for disclosure during these engagements, stressing the shift from awareness to tangible action in aligning with ISSB standards. Interactions included insightful dialogues with the World Resources Institute on disclosure’s role in curbing carbon emissions and a stakeholder dinner hosted by the Association of Certified Chartered Accountants (ACCA) to discuss routes to high-quality disclosure.

The inaugural Beijing International Sustainability Conference underscored the need for a unified language of disclosure. Notable figures from the China Federation of Industrial Economics, Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), ACCA, and CDP echoed the call to transition from awareness to impactful action.

The global implementation of ISSB standards, in China and elsewhere, holds the promise for substantial comparability, laying a robust foundation for consistent and useful sustainability-related financial data.
