Non-profit reporting on the horizon with a new global foundation

Non-profit reporting on the horizon with a new global foundation.

Earlier this month the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy (CIPFA) and Humentum unveiled the International Non-Profit Reporting Foundation (INPRF). This new, independent entity will shepherd the development and adoption of the International Non-Profit Accounting Standard (INPAS), a tailored framework designed to improve transparency and accountability across the non-profit sector globally.

The newly established Foundation takes the baton from the IFR4NPO initiative, stepping in as the long-term steward of INPAS. Drawing on the IFRS for SMEs framework, INPAS has been thoughtfully adapted to meet the distinct needs of non-profit organisations. This approach not only streamlines the learning curve for preparers and analysts familiar with IFRS for SMEs, but also opens up the possibility of dual reporting with minimal friction. Encouragingly, it sets the stage for a digital future. While the latest exposure draft does not address machine-readability, the framework’s foundations suggest a clear pathway towards XBRL adoption and structured data in the longer term.

A global baseline for non-profit reporting could enhance trust and efficiency in this sector, especially when paired with digital, machine-readable disclosures. We’ll be watching this space.
