Nordic countries take digital reporting up a notch – and it’s working

Posted on June 22, 2025 by Editor

The Nordic region has made remarkable strides in digital reporting, with a collaborative programme that’s turning heads across Europe. A recent blog from XBRL US delves into the Nordic Smart Government & Business (NSG&B) initiative. This ambitious effort aimed to create seamless, secure, real-time data sharing across borders. Launched by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2016 and implemented between 2021–2024, the project now boasts participation from 21 government agencies and significant uptake by SMEs.

This isn’t just digital transformation for show. The initiative tackled everything from e-Invoicing to harmonised financial data APIs and streamlined VAT processes. Denmark, Finland, and Sweden already report in XBRL format, and the programme built on that, developing a common semantic model and APIs to exchange structured data across jurisdictions while respecting local accounting nuances. In short: businesses get fewer admin headaches, governments get better data, and tech providers get a consistent foundation to build on.

This is a textbook case of regulation enabling progress. By fostering alignment on data standards and system interoperability, the Nordic model demonstrates how digital reporting can drive economic efficiency, not just meet compliance requirements. And the result? By 2025, estimated savings for SMEs could reach EUR 500 million.
