Small mid-caps step into the spotlight in evolving EU simplification package

The European Commission has published its fourth omnibus proposal, introducing a new category: ‘small mid-cap enterprises’ (SMCs). The aim? To support companies transitioning beyond SME status with continued simplified obligations, mirroring those already available to SMEs.
This move builds on the Commission’s earlier SME Relief Package and follows calls—like those in the Draghi and Letta reports—for more proportionality in regulation. SMCs, defined as companies up to three times the size of SMEs, would benefit from streamlined rules across several EU regulations, including data protection, trade defence, and financial reporting.
As with previous omnibus proposals, this initiative is part of the Commission’s ongoing effort to reduce red tape and boost competitiveness. But it’s all still in flux. Expect changes. Keep an eye out—we’ll continue tracking developments as the proposals evolve.
