When AI meets XBRL, sustainability gets smarter
What happens when artificial intelligence meets digital sustainability reporting? The latest collaboration between OpenEarth Foundation and XBRL International offers a glimpse into that intersection. Together, we explored how AI can interpret XBRL-tagged sustainability data, enhancing the way information is analysed, compared and turned into insight.
As part of the project, OpenEarth developed an open-source tool that converts XBRL into JSON, making sustainability disclosures easier to integrate into digital systems such as their flagship city climate data platform CityCatalyst. The results show just how powerful structured, machine-readable data can be when combined with AI analysis, and how open standards like XBRL create space for innovation.
OpenEarth’s tool is by no means the only way to convert XBRL into JSON, but it’s a great demonstration of what’s possible when developers build on the open XBRL ecosystem. AI-enabled analysis, visualisation and reporting capabilities are all within reach wherever XBRL data is used well.
This collaboration reinforces a simple truth: open, structured data is the foundation of transparency and trust. As sustainability reporting accelerates under frameworks like ESRS, pairing AI with XBRL can turn complex disclosures into actionable insight for a range of users, not just in the financial world but also across the public sector.
