XRB opens call for views on international climate reporting alignment
New Zealand’s External Reporting Board (XRB) is seeking input on the future shape of its climate reporting standards. The request for information, launched in April and open until 13 June, focuses on whether the Aotearoa New Zealand Climate Standards (NZ CS) should move closer to frameworks used in other jurisdictions.
The review asks whether aligning more closely with standards like IFRS S2, Australia’s AASB S2, or GRI 102 would reduce complexity for cross-border filers and improve outcomes for users—without undermining local relevance. The XRB also raises the prospect of mutual recognition and explores whether tweaks or wholesale change would best serve New Zealand’s market.
NZ CS were first issued in 2022 and came into effect last year. Since then, global sustainability reporting has evolved fast, and New Zealand is reassessing its position. This is phase one of a three-part review process, with later stages potentially proposing amendments or new standards.
