FRC opens sandboxes for audit tech and simpler annual reports
The UK’s Financial Reporting Council (FRC) has announced a significant expansion of its sandbox innovation programme, with three new initiatives inviting audit firms and companies to work directly with the regulator. A new Audit Tech & AI Sandbox, open to firms of all sizes, will explore how auditing standards apply to emerging technologies – including generative and agentic AI – in practice, while a research project will examine the barriers smaller firms face in adopting audit technology.
Of particular interest is the second round of the FRC’s Simplifying Annual Reporting Sandbox, tackling one of the most persistent complaints from companies and investors alike: that annual reports are too long and complex. The first round worked with five listed companies to streamline disclosures and improve clarity, with participants reporting useful results; round two will prioritise smaller listed companies, with a four-week application window now open.
“Good regulation should create the conditions for innovation, not hold it back,” said FRC Chief Executive Richard Moriarty. We agree – and add the note that clearer, better-structured reporting and smarter technology adoption are two sides of the same coin. Digital, structured disclosure makes reports easier to navigate, compare and analyse, even as their human-readable form is being streamlined.
