China’s climate standard takes a step forward

Chinese authorities have released a draft climate disclosure standard and are calling for (fast!) public feedback. The new framework, open for comment until 31 May, is aimed at enhancing transparency around climate-related risks and opportunities.
This is the first thematic standard under China’s broader sustainability reporting system, which launched its “Basic Standard” in December 2024. The overarching goal is to create a national sustainability disclosure regime aligned with the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB)—but tailored to Chinese priorities and context. By 2027, China plans to have both its basic and climate standards fully in place.
Investors, regulators and other stakeholders increasingly need clear, comparable data to drive capital allocation and policy. China’s draft aims to meet that demand while positioning its economy for a lower-carbon future.
Alignment with ISSB standards opens the door for high-quality, digital, structured disclosures. And with the right digital implementation, it could signal a shift towards decision-useful data.
