GRI launches taxonomy

Machine-readable, GRI-aligned sustainability reporting just became a reality, with the launch of the GRI Sustainability Taxonomy. Covering all GRI Standards, it allows organisations to file sustainability disclosures digitally using XBRL, and aims to enable faster data collection, easier analysis and improved comparability.
Interoperability has been a key focus for GRI, and the new Sustainability Taxonomy has been designed to ensure a high level of alignment with the Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) taxonomies. The advent of digital disclosures should also make GRI reporting more compatible across different regions and countries.
As Cristina Gil White, GRI Chief Engagement Officer, observed, the new taxonomy is a practical, inclusive tool for an ever-evolving digital reporting world, and one that closes the gap between reported impacts and the people who need to interpret and act on them. “Looking forward, the approach to create the Sustainability Taxonomy is shaping how we develop our Standards, bringing greater clarity and precision.”
It’s a significant step forward – and there is more to look out for. GRI is creating filing tools, to be released later in 2025, to allow issuers to validate their reports, supporting reliable, high-quality disclosures. For third party service providers, GRI will be providing a set of tools to make it easier to integrate the Sustainability Taxonomy alongside existing reporting products. Through the GRI Academy, it is also developing training materials that seek to provide practical support for digital reporting and help build a more transparent, data-informed sustainability landscape.
We congratulate GRI on their progress so far, and we’ll be looking forward to the next developments! Read more here.
