India’s Digital Payments Surge Passes New Milestone
This caught our eye. Worldline’s annual India Digital Payments Report confirms that Unified Payments Interface (UPI) processed 228.5 billion transactions in 2025, a 33% increase on the prior year, with transaction value reaching INR 299.74 trillion. Person-to-merchant payments rose 34%, while the average transaction size continued to fall (now just ₹592 for merchant payments) as digital payments displace cash for even the smallest everyday purchases.
Merchant acceptance infrastructure is scaling in step: UPI QR codes in the field grew 15% to over 731 million, making India increasingly another “QR-first” economy.
Transaction volumes at this scale generate enormous quantities of financial data across millions of entities. As India’s payment rails mature, the case for expanding standardised, machine-readable reporting grows with them — because reporting infrastructure must keep pace with the transaction infrastructure it serves. Food for thought?
