SEC extends iXBRL to clearing agency applications

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) confirmed that its new self-regulatory organisation (SRO) taxonomy will require clearing agencies to submit parts of Form CA-1 applications and amendments in iXBRL through the EDGAR system.

Under the new requirements, selected data points within Form CA-1 will be tagged using iXBRL, sitting alongside the narrative content already familiar to filers. This allows the SEC to receive structured, machine-readable information directly through EDGAR, supporting more efficient review while keeping the filing process recognisably consistent for applicants.

This step builds on the SEC’s long-running use of XBRL and iXBRL across financial statements, funds reporting and risk disclosures. Bringing clearing agencies into that structured reporting ecosystem reflects a broader trend: regulatory data is increasingly expected to be usable, comparable and ready for analysis from day one.

Even with an initial, targeted tagging scope, iXBRL brings immediate benefits. Structuring key elements of Form CA-1 at the point of submission improves data quality, supports automated checks and makes regulatory information far more reusable across supervisory workflows. As with other EDGAR implementations, this provides a clear foundation that can expand over time without changing the underlying reporting model.
