EFRAG weighs ESRS simplification with survey and outreach events

EFRAG is asking stakeholders to weigh in on the simplification of the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).

On one front, EFRAG’s cost–benefit survey (open until 12 September) is designed to gather views on whether trimming reporting requirements can cut compliance costs without undermining the EU Green Deal’s objectives. The trade-off is a familiar one: preparers warn of heavy burdens, while investors stress that comparability and depth must not be sacrificed. Simplification, after all, can mean efficiency to some, but if it’s not done well, it can also mean hollow disclosures.

The consultation invites input not only from companies within the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive’s scope, but also from investors, lenders, data providers, and civil society. The outcome will help determine whether Europe can strike a balance between credible, decision-useful information and practical, scalable reporting requirements.

At the same time, EFRAG is hosting outreach events across September to hear directly from companies, investors, standard setters, civil society and more. Sessions begin online on 10 September, followed by hybrid meetings in Paris, The Netherlands, Madrid, Brussels, Milan and Luxembourg. Each will focus on the revised exposure drafts, with presentations on amendments and open discussion.

Together, the survey and these forums aim to shape the next version of Europe’s sustainability reporting rules, striking a balance between credibility and practicality that both markets and preparers can live with.
