Similar Challenges Face Users of Big Data and Structured Data

The amount of data being collected in both the public and private sectors is in a word, staggering. At least 2.5 quintillion bytes of data each day [Ed: Really? That’s 2.5 x 10^18! Has someone counted it all?]. Unsurprisingly much of that data goes unused. Research by Forrester shows that between 60% and 73% of all data within an enterprise goes unused for business intelligence (BI) and analytics. A ComputerWeekly.com blog post highlights one reason that XBRL users will recognise. Siloing among teams leaves data stranded and managed as a technical, rather than analytical exercise.
